DESCRIPTION:Advanced Workshop — Facilitated by Linda Kohanov \nTime: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. \nCost includes lunch\, snacks\, beverages\, and workshop materials. \nThis Advanced Intensive is for people who have previously attended The Power of the Herd\, Beyond Words\, or Harnessing the Invisible workshops and would like to raise their skill level specifically in dealing with challenging people and horses. Limited to four participants\, the workshop will offer the opportunity to gain fluent use of the Five Roles of a Master Herder in working with increasingly dominant horses\, and how to translate these skills into the human world to gain the cooperation and respect of aggressive or resistant employees\, bosses\, children\, spouses\, and community members. \nLinda Kohanov will share the hurdles she overcame and the surprising insights she gained to rehabilitate Midnight Merlin\, a dangerous\, formerly abused stallion. In the process\, she will show how these principles can be used to handle challenging people and situations. This advanced leadership intensive is for anyone who wants to learn new ways to transform interpersonal conflict\, power struggles\, bullying\, and other difficulties at home\, school\, work\, and in political\, religious\, or social activism contexts. Linda will also reveal the astonishing gifts behind Merlin’s volatile demeanor\, gifts that could only be accessed through a counterintuitive approach to power. \n“Merlin’s sons showed the same proud\, highly sensitive\, occasionally explosive yet immensely intelligent disposition their father exhibited\,” she says\, “traits that don’t respond well to cookie-cutter\, dominance- submission techniques. By using the empowered\, compassionate approach I learned from Merlin\, my staff and I were able to avert many of the difficulties that would have led this younger generation down the same path of violence and rage that Merlin experienced.” Linda shows how these principles can be translated to human situations where working with frightened\, aggressive\, abused\, or potentially explosive children and adults requires a courageous\, non-predatory approach to power. \nIn her book\, The Five Roles of a Master Herder\, Linda discusses in-depth the importance of learning when and how to use the dominant role properly for its leadership and life-enhancing benefits\, and what happens when people either overemphasize or abdicate this role. The following excerpt from Chapter Five\, “Direct and Protect: Dominance without Malice\,” communicates the challenges and the benefits of employing this role well: \nWhether you overemphasize or avoid the Dominant role\, learning to employ it consciously and judiciously is one of the most important—and difficult—skills to develop. A mature\, well-balanced executive\, community leader\, or parent uses this assertive energy to direct others toward common goals\, set boundaries\, keep youngsters and adults out of trouble\, motivate resistant individuals\, break up fights\, and protect the group from predators.   \nIn working with large animals\, master herders also cultivate a sophisticated knowledge of dominance to handle the flamboyant power plays that aggressive herd members engage to challenge authority and intimidate others into submission. Similarly\, parents and teachers must help naturally dominant children modulate and channel this sometimes-explosive force into benevolent pursuits.  \nFor anyone who deals with troubled teens\, proficiency in the dominant role is essential. Coaching all adolescents—from bullies to shyer\, more sensitive students—in how to develop a mature approach to dominance is one of the greatest gifts that anyone who works with young people can give to future generations. \nHere’s the problem: Managing\, let alone working for or living with people who over-identify with the dominant role is sometimes emotionally painful\, other times intensely frustrating\, and occasionally even dangerous. Teaching unbalanced alphas to use their power wisely requires considerable focus\, courage\, and finesse. In these efforts\, you must not only be powerful yourself\, you must also model a centered\, socially conscious use of this often-misdirected force—even if dominance is not your natural inclination. And if dominance is your native tongue\, you must transform your own instinctual tendencies to control\, intimidate\, divide and conquer into an impeccable source of refined influence. Either way\, it may be the challenge of a lifetime. \nIn The Power of the Herd Advanced Intensive\, you will practice the verbal techniques and nonverbal body language that allows you to work more effectively with naturally dominant people and animals. We must stand up to aggressors\, some of who also see themselves as victims of past injustice (and occasionally truly are). And we must resist the urge to use shame as a weapon. To do this we need power combined with compassion. We need to exercise emotional heroism.” \nIn peace and in war\, George Washington exhibited emotional heroism\, advising his closest associates to “Let your heart feel for the affliction and distress of everyone.” Dealing with the pain and resentment experienced in his own war-torn country 200 years later\, the Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh observed that ‘When another person makes you suffer\, it is because he suffers deeply in himself….Happiness and safety are not an individual matter. His happiness and safety are crucial to your happiness and safety.” \n“No one made this controversial notion more apparent to me than my stallion Merlin\,” Linda emphasizes. “Misunderstanding and punishment created the monster he became. I knew I would never be safe around him until his trauma was transformed\, not through naive\, ‘it’s not his fault’ indulgence\, but through a heroic use of power combined with mindfulness\, compassion\, and self-control. Whenever I achieved this balanced state of power in myself\, Merlin would shift from violence to thoughtfulness and respect\, learning over time to trust feelings of safety\, connection\, affection\, and wellbeing. If a horse can achieve this\, why can’t we?” \nThis workshop is for leaders\, teachers\, parents\, counselors\, health care workers\, clergy\, social activists\, first-responders\, law enforcement personnel\, and people who work or live with those who act out in aggressive or intensely fearful ways at times\, including trauma survivors\, soldiers and veterans with post-traumatic stress\, and their spouses and other family members. \nNo horse experience or previous interest in horses is necessary. Author of the new book Equine Connections: Polyvagal Principles\, and Co-author of the book Safe Kids\, Smart Parents: What Parents Need to Know to Keep Their Children Safe (with Elizabeth Bailey\, RN BC)\, she is frequently called upon as an expert commentator on CNN\, Good Morning America\, and other national news shows\, including those hosted by Anderson Cooper\, Diane Sawyer\, Piers Morgan\, and Katie Couric. The founder of Transitioning Families\, Dr. Bailey has worked with police departments and the FBI to raise awareness and sensitivity to the issues that victims of rape\, abduction\, and other crimes face in surviving these extreme experiences\, reuniting with their families\, and healing over time. While she has worked with hundreds of individuals and families in crisis\, she is best known as the therapist who helped Jaycee Dugard reunite with her family after she was rescued from a highly-publicized 18-year abduction in California. \n\n\n\nLinda Kohanov\, author of five books\, including The Tao of Equus (2001)\, and The Power of the Herd (2013)\, has worked with numerous mental health professionals over the years to offer equine-facilitated interventions to people in crisis\, including rape and childhood sexual abuse survivors\, veterans and their spouses\, and families dealing with divorce\, remarriage\, troubled teens\, suicide attempts\, and other challenges.  Since 2003\, Linda has also trained over 300 professionals worldwide in the techniques she and her colleagues have developed since Eponaquest was originally founded in 1997 as a collective of counselors\, educators and horse trainers. \n\n\n\nIn 2013\, Rebecca and Linda combined their talents to develop a new approach to helping families recover from conflict\, unproductive ancestral patterns\, and traumatic events.  Connection Focused Therapy® is the multi-disciplinary modality they created to help people become empowered as individuals while also learning to support\, collaborate with\, and draw strength from their loved ones\, peers\, and communities. In this effort\, Rebecca and Linda have drawn upon the “wisdom and power of the herd\,” a phrase they use to describe therapeutic techniques and life skills inspired by how horses take care of individual and group needs simultaneously. \n\n\n\n“Horses are herbivores\, but they’re not quivering\, gutless victims\,” Linda reveals\, drawing upon four years of research for her latest book The Power of the Herd. “Horses model nonpredatory power in action\, working together to stand up to predators and protect vulnerable family members. Then\, after the danger has passed\, they all go back to grazing\, back to enjoying life to its fullest. There’s no question that humans in crisis can learn a lot from the courage\, agility and peaceful engagement with life that horses embody. \n\n\n\n“With the right support\, people too can heal from traumatic experiences. Few therapists have experienced this more profoundly than Dr. Rebecca Bailey\, who has spent over 20 years helping survivors and their families recover from the most extreme experiences you can possibly imagine.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn working together\, Linda and Rebecca immediately found common ground—and not just in understanding how amazing horses are in assisting this process. These two seasoned collaborators also agree that deep healing happens only through nourishing relationships\, through families and other caring social groups in which people are valued for who they are as individuals\, while also knowing that their loved ones are capable of supporting them during the hard times\, celebrating the good times\, and fostering an underlying sense of peaceful connection\, rejuvenation\, and exploration in daily life. Connection Focused Therapy not only helps individuals process trauma\, it gives families the skills they need to handle crisis\, uplift each other\, and thrive long term. \n\n\n\n“Survivors need to define themselves by who they are\, not what they went through\,” Rebecca emphasizes.  “The scars of serious trauma can hold people back or become something they build upon and incorporate into new strengths. But people don’t get better in a vacuum.  This is definitely what brought Linda and I together: An understanding of the interdependent nature of life and\, consequently\, healing. From this perspective\, it becomes clear that families\, communities\, and other social systems can promote growth and transformation—or reinforce fear\, hate\, resentment and depression. Families are a lot like herds. They’re impacted by each other\, by the environment\, and by the events that touch their lives. Giving people the support\, and the skills\, to reconnect to each other is crucial.” \n\n\n\nAs an expert in family reunification following\, in the most extreme cases\, abduction and sexual abuse\, Rebecca was particularly intrigued by Linda’s fourth book The Power of the Herd\, not only for its emphasis on social intelligence and authentic community but for its unprecedented insights into nonpredatory power. “The people I work with have dealt with some of the most vicious\, self-serving human predators out there\,” the noted psychologist says. “Victims of predatory acts often have trouble reclaiming their own power because they refuse to adopt the cruel and manipulative images of power their perpetrators modeled—and rightly so.” \n\n\n\nIn her work\, Linda draws insight from empowered herd behavior to create tools for humans to excel in life and work. No previous horse experience is necessary. \nBest-selling author and equine-facilitated learning pioneer Linda Kohanov will also teach participants how to use her Way of the Horse book and wisdom cards (art by Kim McElroy) for personal reflection and inspiration. All participants will receive the Way of the Horse\, not only for use during the workshop\, but as a guide for how to take horse wisdom back to the human world when they return home. \nWhy Black Horse Wisdom? \nAfter studying cross-cultural\, multi-disciplinary writings\, ancient myths and stories involving black horses\, Linda saw a recognizable theme.
